Reducing allotment plot sizes

We have been having a debate at KG on allotment sizes. We have a feature going in the February issue on a site that turned two large overgrown sites into tiny starter plots for people, complete with mini coloured sheds containing a few colour co-ordinated tools. A complete starter kit for growing yo...

A funny thing happened on the allotment

Actually nothing that funny has happened to me on the allotment other than applying Nemaslug nematodes in the pouring rain. I spent a happy hour mixing and watering all the beds with a watering can. To anyone seeing me they must have thought what on earth is that batty woman doing watering her beds ...

Goji berries

The KG team were wondering whether anyone has tasted goji berries or grown them? Do you rate them or hate them?

Your season in 10 words

Ok we are looking for some comments for our Last Word in our November issue if you fancy taking part. How would you sum up your growing season in 10 words? Mine might be... Slugs invaded and ate the first sowing, second and third Or as an alternative it could be....Nightmare, slugs, flowers, courget...

Re: Mammoth marrow competition

Well the competition rules has been published in the magazine every month since about July so no excuses I'm afraid. Clear as day in the rules. Any marrow will do.

Re: Mammoth marrow competition

Just to let you know that in the end we decided to leave it open to any variety. We have not actually specified in the rules that you have to only use a marrow grown from the free seeds we gave away.
A giant pumpkin competition may be a good one next year.

Sitting and admiring your plot

And here is another question for you. The answers may be used as a Last Word in a future issue of the magazine depending on how many we get. How much time do you actually spend just sitting and looking at your vegetable plot? 1 Never, too busy 2 An hour a day watching the bees buzz from flower to fl...

Tidy plot versus a jungle

So the question is...
Are your veggies healthier and suffer from less pest damage if grown in perfect straight lines, no weeds at all and no flowers. Or are they better if grown within a jumbled mix of flowers, herbs and a few weeds around..to the point you almost have to hunt for the crops?

Re: The Giant Marrow Topic!

Marvin the marrow is growing very well in his round pot. Square pots must slow up growth when the root hits the corner and then has to acutely change direction rather than going in a natural circular motion. I am talking absolute rubbish. Not a clue which is best. Anyone else have any theories?

Dealing with glut of cucumbers

So we have a feature in our June issue on what do do with all your cucumbers. We have had similar features before on gluts of beans and courgettes but it is all too easy to have too many cucumbers as well. Anyone got any tips on using a lot of cucumber? Cucumber soup recipe maybe? Cucumber jam? Cucu...

Re: When is it a marrow

So presumably there is a point when it is neither a marrow nor a courgette.... be it only for a minute or two?
