Re: Howard 700 rotavator fuel problems

James, what engine does your 700 have? Is throttle cable working correctly at engine end, it could be seized. Was it running OK previously?

Re: Lub oil for mower engines

Lubrication oil for a diesel engine may have more additives but do you need them for a petrol engine? I would use whatever the engine maker recommends. Note, older engines eg Villiers, JAp etc very often used Castrol XL or similar monograde oils, modern multigrade oils are not recommended for these ...

Re: Wheelbarrows

I have just had a look in my old 1937 MAC (Metal Agencies Company, Bristol) catalogue and it shows both wooden and metal garden wheelbarrows. Wooden with pneumatic tyre cost 55 shillings (£2.75), with wooden wheel 29/6 (£1.475). Steel barrow with wrought iron wheel 24/9 (£1.24). 'Ironcrete' galvaniz...

Re: Rotavor Assistance required please Cultimatic B66

Lightpill, sorry to hear a good machine has been 'damaged' whilst on loan, one of the dangers of loaning such things. On a brighter a note, have you tried posting a question on the vhgmc website forum, open to non club members. I am sure if you include a photo of the 'modified' throttle linkage some...

Re: TABLE SAW SPARES

If you take the broken belt to any good drive belt stockist eg Express Bearings at Shepton Mallet they should be able to match it up with a stock item. Good luck.

Re: howard rotavator

Chris, wire pot scourers would be better than wire wool as they have a more open texture, wire wool would probably be too dense a mass and could cause the engine to run rich. See m for an explanation of how they work. My old Rototiller uses oil soaked fine wood shavings after the oil bath filter, se...

Another good place to ask machinery related questions.

The new updated website of the Vintage Horticultural & Garden Machinery Club (VHGMC) now includes a forum where members and non members can discuss anything machinery or handtool related. See www.vhgmc.co.uk .

Re: howard rotavator

I am not aware of any Villiers carburettor needing oil in it. Do you mean the air filter? Some of these engines were fitted with an oil bath air filter and there should be a mark showing the oil level (about level with the bottom of the wire mesh inside the filter). If the external transfer for the ...

Fuel grades

The only thing I can think that would be different is the octane/RON rating. There is a very interesting article in the FBHVC (Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs)newsletter, issue 5 of 2008, which is available online. It details possible problems of running old engines on new petrol which ...

The fact it starts suggests whatever compression you have is enough. I have various machines with Villiers Mk 10, 12 and 15 engines and some seem to have very little compression, but they all run. An engine that starts but fails to keep running may have a faulty condensor in the magneto.

Rotavators and couch grass

I am sure I read in one of the manuals for the SIMAR Rototiller that it will leave most of the couch on top if it is used without the flap on the back of the rotavator (miller) box. Have not tried it myself. I suppose it depends how serious the couch problem is. I know I would not be without my old ...

Ron, if you have the old belt any good drive belt stockist (very often also stockist of bearings etc, such as Express Bearings), should be able to measure it and supply the correct one. Only two dimensions to worry about th elength and cross section. Best of luck.

First suspects in the 'mystery of the missing sparks' are points and HT pick up which can suffer from oxidation. But as you have had a spark recently and also noting the comments from hortiman, it may be the condensor. I had a similar problem on my Trusty (two wheeler), I stopped the engine and foun...

Ian the fact it runs at all would suggest to me that fuel is getting through, so I doubt you have an air leak. Another thought as it is a 2 stroke, I have a SIMAR Rototiller 35 (see VHGMC site from KG links page), which will not start unless I drain any fuel/oil residue from the bottom of the crankc...
