Sadly I've just realised the fatal flaw with all these: I detest ordinary KitKats
So would anyone who's tried one of these care to tell me if they improve on the original?

Re: For Aphids and caterpillars.
Thoroughly boil together 5lb of soft soap and 1/4 pound of shag tobacco in 5gal water. Store in a corked jar, and add 1gall of this mixture to 3 gall water. Ah those were the days. This doesn't look a million miles away from a treatment that JB has recommended a few times (maybe without the soap, b...

Re: Anyone making Sourdough bread?
Sorry if this is turning into a monologue I just wanted to say that I stored a recent batch of sourdough starter in the fridge last month. Got out on Thursday and re-started the "feeding" process (you effectively jump in at day 4 or 5 above). Within 24 hours it was racing away and is looki...

Re: A bit of fun.
Have some of ours here in West Cork.. been deluging all day and still more to come... I know; this is what makes Ireland green.. Well you can't have an Emerald Isle without a little bit of water. In the meantime, I'm not sure about getting water piped down from the North. Won't it taste funny? Stuf...

Re: What's the secret of tasty sweetcorn
Well, we bought some from T*scos last week & didn't get round to eating them till a week later. These too tasted pretty dull (and they have been fine in previous weeks) so maybe it's just that the supermarkets are also quick to get them on the shelves. The only thing that got me thinking about t...

Does anyone else think that home grown cobs don't keep as long as shop bought ones?

Re: Anyone making Sourdough bread?
Of course. Just a point for anyone else concerned about what looks like a complex process: - The activity on each of the first 6 days probably only takes 5 minutes each time. - It's important to keep the daily "refresh" going. - For longer term gaps, you can put the "starter" in ...

Re: A bit of fun.
What an interesting set of facts. With a bit of imagination, it should be possible to build resovoirs that can also be civic amenities & used for sailing, fishing etc. I'm very lucky to live near Bristol & have worked with Bristol Water in the past. They have several lakes & reservoirs s...

Re: Anyone making Sourdough bread?
With pleasure JB. First thing is to get your sourdough "starter" going. You won't be ready to bake anything with this for up to a week, till it's ready. In addition, the method below seems to work fine, but don't worry if you see variations on it elsewhere in books or the web. Day 1 50g wa...

Re: Poor Sweetcorn
Interesting that several of you mention water.
Unless we're using special varieties over here, surely sweetcorn grows in countries with drier summers than ours? Was some of the poor performance due to insufficient warmth & sun this year?

What's the secret of tasty sweetcorn
Most of the varieties I've tried in recent years have been delicious. But as the old gardening adage goes, if you don't use them quickly after harvesting, their flavour starts to fade. Ones I've frozen also aren't quite so good. By comparison, ones we've bought from the shops this year seem tasty (a...

Re: Anyone making Sourdough bread?
Hi Tigger, good to "see" you again. Yes I'd love some recipes. I'd also be interested in any tips he's got. The technique seems to be slightly different from ordinary bread made with standard yeast. I've got a couple of books by Dan Leppard and he recommends handling the dough as little as...

Re: Seed tapes
Hi Geoff and Monika, I know that Colin M had a little bit of a problem with germination a few years back Just to clarify, I've used several types of pelleted seeds with much success, but have never tried pelleted carrot. My germination problems have been with ordinary carrot seed and I often wonder...

Sorry Alan, was there something specific about Manuka on the link you provided? When I tried it, it asked me to login & didn't show any specific messages, so I guess you already have an account there.
