....the origin of a "Jacobs Join" We had one at Christmas and I was asked where the phrase came from. If you don't know it's when everybody brings food. It might just be a northern thing.
Hope the great minds on the forum can come up with the answer.

Hi Gill

Though born and raised in Lancashire and lived 40 years in Yorkshire, I can't say I've ever heard it used. It is a Pennine phrase it seems.

Hello Gill and Alan, now that's interesting. I have often used the phrase but never knew that it is a fairly local expression!

Gill and Alan Thanks for that one - I'd not heard of it called that before - down here it's known as a 'Beggars Banquet' or a 'Pot Luck' - which I guess, are more self-explanatory terms.
