With the non-stop downpours we've had for the last few days some of my ripe and nearly ripe outdoor tomatoes have split.

Is it safe to eat them?

I've read conflicting answers on the web.

I make passata out of most of my toms. Any with splits, lumps, holes, BER and cracks get processed and put in the pot, just cut off the little bits you're not using. As long as there's no obvious mould or rot on the crack which would taint the taste, and you've got rid of any creepy crawlies (they come out in the soak water) I would happily eat them 8)

I agree - just cut out any bad bits and use them (ie., the good bits) for cooking.
