Most likely the spammers were very active. Possibly some bots too, but perhaps the forum had a security issue in that it wasn't totally up to date with every issue to prevent the bad guys and they got through.
I had an issue the other day with a flood of spam on one of my email accounts. Sometimes it's just a case of blink and you miss the necessary update. Then those greedy evil creeps find a way to get in and hammer your place with their cr@p.

I’m currently locked out of my uni account because of one of those blasted updates. Seemingly I don’t’ exist anymore. Microsh.. oft, always something when they do an update.
