I know the Nantes carrot, I've Grown them and eaten them, but they were Nantes 3. Do the change in number signify anything, Is Nantes 5 better than Nantes 3 ???

Great question! I also thought about that. Nothing on the pack to explain so I assumed maybe bred on to be hardier & stand longer, although I also thought maybe a bit more carrot fly resistant but that wasn't the case with the ones I grew, as even though growing them in potato sacks they still had the odd blemish. I think a bit bigger but that could have been growing in compost rather than soil.

Having trawled t'internet I have not found any mention of what the numbers relate to, I would guess that the higher number is a later strain of the genus, but I don't know for sure.
Been gardening for over 65 years and still learning.
