Jumbo Apples

I read in the paper recently that some apples this year are massive because early frosts killed off a lot of fruit buds, leaving the remaining fruit to grow bigger because of less competition for. Utrition. Retailers are apparently having to review their normal size specifications to avoid wastage as these apples are perfect - just much bigger than normal.

We bought two Bramley apples from a market stall today which bore this out . They were MASSIVE. One weighed 1 lb 9 oz, the other weighed 1 lb 7 oz. Either would have fed a family for a week! Last week we bought some Braeburn dessert apples which were almost double their normal size.

Strangely this doesn’t seem to have happened with other fruits though. I haven,t seen any jumbo pears, plums etc.on sale this autumn. Perhaps apple blossom just caught the bad frosts for timing this spring. Their size is making a stuffed apple a meal in itself - forget the main course !
