Pearlwort - again

Looking at the KG forum archive, I realised that I asked the same question six years ago, but never received a reply:
We have pearlwort on the allotment which forms thick, well "anchored" mats of lichen-type plants with tiny seed heads. I find it quite useful in that it stops the soil running down the steepest parts of our allotment where we don't grow anything, but in the growing areas it is a nuisance. Scraping it off works for a bit but then it comes back. How can I get rid of it?
