Pruning a damson tree

Our damson tree has grown very out of shape with several branches particularly long. It's getting a little too big for its location and we need to trim it back. Can damsons be pruned ok without it "suckering"?
Thanks, Helen.

I think plum type trees are all prone to suckering whatever you do as for pruning it shouldn't be pruned in winter wait til late April when the tree sap is rising as this cuts down the chance of disease
