Hi Bazza, best wishes for a successful harvest.
If you haven't seen it, here's a thread from a while back discussing Mangels (in this case, my Yellow ones). Amongst the replies is a lovely link from Alain: http://www.kitchengarden.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=4630&view=previous
In the meantime, you've whetted my appetite and a quick Google revealed a number of places that can supply Red Mangel seeds and I'm going to order some. Since there will be far more than I need, you are welcome to drop me a PM if you'd like a few seeds to try along side your yellow ones.
If you want to get some yourself, the site I found is: http://www.seeds-by-size.co.uk/beet98.html It's not the easiest of sites to buy things from an relies on using Paypal. However for anyone wanting seeds in medium to larger quantities, it might be attractive.

As a follow up to this thread, our Red Mangels did well this year. I only sowed a few and look like I will have more than I can use.
So far the first one I dug today weighed 10lbs (enough for 2 gallons of Mangel wine). I have a few more more of these available if anyone would like one or two - we're down in Bristol if you're interested.

Quite possible Mangel Wurzels might become more available in future as oil declines and grain becomes more expensive, roots as winter fodder may become a more attractive alternative. I remember Jersey farmers growing mangels as winter fodder when I was a child.we used to carve lanterns from large ones as they do with pumpkins. As a member of HDRA i would say there are other benefits of membership, I feel it's worth the money spent, I am happy to support their work, for me, the seeds were a bonus.
Sit down before a fact as a little child, be prepared to give up every preconcieved notion, follow humbly wherever and to whatever abyss nature leads, or you shall learn nothing.
