My letter has been published in total in the latest (May) issue of Kitchen Gardens magazine, thanks to an enlightened editor. I am happy to answer ANY matters arising here.
For brevity it was not mentioned in the letter that we found it expedient to add an extra perforated pipe under the plastic sheet in the trench just to be sure that there could not be a build-up of water from outside or inside sources.
