Back in April I challenged a biologist on another forum with this one.

All credit to him, he just PM'd me.

"A friend of mine has just found the same thing as you described earlier this year, both with snails and with plum stones under the same water butt. he says that it is a field mouse that is doing it- which would make a bit more sense than anything else."
