Seemingly out of place on the kitchen garden forum, but not completely so.
Why not ???
What is the connection.

He did indeed grow vegetables during the war. But as I understand it he had the rose business when war broke out with a huge amount of stock which he stood little chance of moving.
Decided to ditch the rose stock and grow vegetables instead.
Resumed roses after the war.
I always thought he was a breeder but in actual fact he started off by mainly importing.
One of the characters of the time and a very good self publicist
1/2 point each to Peter & robo

My father used to buy roses from Harry Wheat croft. I must say I don't like the one in your photo it reminds me of an Eton mess. Perhaps it smells nice. That's another thing I can't see the point in - scent less roses.

It does have a nice scent, and we live not far from Eton.

Doesn't worry me PP, you may call its a rose by any other name, it has sharp enough thorns to fight its own battles.
