This year I sowed some seed of red onions Rossa di Milano (out of date but gave them a go anyway to use the packet)March 26 in the polytunnel, they germinated and grew well but I forgot to transplant as planned and they grew into little bulbs, the tops went over and dried out(heat and crowding i suspect) so i pulled them up yesturday - but the bulbs are only the size of an onion set or thereabouts but tight and solid-.
My question is could i use these as set bulbs for next year? to plant this autumn or next spring. If so what do i need to do to look after them until then.

Anyone got any advice?

I am replying to my own post - sorry - but just wanted to encourage anyone out there who knows how to grow their own sets to advise me.

I've got the onions and am itching to do the right thing by them should I store as sets or make into pickled onions????

Why not try a few as sets next year and pickle the rest? You win some , you lose some.
