I had quite a few weedy shallots left from last year so planted them in a spare patch of the veg bed and for the past few weeks have been lifting a few at a time, and using them as spring onions.

Hi PP,
Onions grown in this fashion are called scallions and they are very widely grown in the Netherlands and are simply called onions in the green.

Thanks Johnboy, I've heard of scallions but not realised exactly what they were. It just goes to show that something you try by chance is common practice somewhere else. Nothing new .......

I never knew that either. I just thought that scallions was another name for Spring onions, a bit like zucchini / courgette. I tipped my budding shallots in the compost & just had a wee peek & have loads of leaf. Perfect - waste not, want not!
