For those planning to clear the Parsnips, a little reminder, don't get the sap on your skin.

Been lucky so far, never suffered the problem.

Didn't know they were a problem!!

I have only been blistered the once by Parsnips and it was a lot worse than Peter's picture. It was a very sunny day and i cut a lot of leaves off either side of the row of Parsnips.....i then bundled the leaves up and carried them to the compost heap with bare arms.
Not something i'll be doing in a hurry again. The funny thing is, i can't remember any of the older gardeners ever mentioning they were a problem.

I was very aware of that when I was infested with the old neighbours self sown parsnips! Got a bit paranoid actually, but new neighbours & they got rid of them during winter when they didn't have the leaves - yep I told them about the sap, but the man of the plot is a gardener & knew - hadn't shared that with his wife though & she is the clearer of the plot! From glances between them she was not too impressed!

That was early last summer and the skin is still discoloured where the blisters were.

Hogweed is worse, got hit by a strimmed stem once and I've always kept well away from giant hogweed.

I didn't know this either. Have regularly carried home them with no gloves..... I won't now though!

I have bad reaction to carrot leaves - not blisters but red itchy rash. Courgettes as well.

These vegetables certainly bite back!!

If it's not the thorns, sap, or nasty wee (& sometimes big) insects trying to get us, it's the wind, general weather, blight, mould & so many other challenges! Got to be made of strong stuff to grow veg - kind of like the challenge actually, even if loose a fair bit now & again! Something else always does well to take away the drama & give balance!

Should anyone ever have occasion to come into direct contact with me, such as shaking hands, I can confirm my sap does not have any such effect

Here in South Wales Pembrey country park has big notices about not touching wild parsnips. Maybe they are worse than the cultivated ones which I have never had any problems with.

Since then I had to take a step back from things machinery.

Never suffered with that problem thankfully, but will certainly be aware next time. I have heard that sap in combination with hot weather makes it worse - something to do with your skin being more sensitive or open pores or something, but that may be rubbish! When I worked on a nursery thousands of years ago I had a friend who would experience a horrible skin reaction if she ever got close to one particular type of houseplant (Scindapsus), yet no one else ever suffered. Allergies are odd aren't they!

You've reminded me about the sap from some Spurge (euphorbia) that splashed my eye when I was weeding last year. It was only a tiny bit but was agony for hours. I thought I had blinded myself.
