My husband, who's not a gardener, came across details of this plant identification device which I thought might be worth posting about in case anybody is interested. I think it might be American but I expect many of our plants are the same.

Thanks Primrose, that looks good. I may know some veg but hopeless with flowers & it is a tedious process finding out what it might be from a standard search.
