A Fruity Flavour for 2009 at RHS Garden Wisley - 7-8 March

Postby KGAdmin » Wed Feb 25, 2009 11:27 am

The RHS’ Grow Your Own campaign, sponsored by NS&I, is set to return to RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey in 2009 with events in March, July and October. Building on the success of the previous years’ campaigns, 2009 will continue to encourage vegetable growers across the country while inspiring visitors to also give growing fruit a try.

Three major events will be taking place at Wisley, starting with a free open day on Saturday 7 March. The campaign comes as 2009 celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Bramley apple and marks the launch of Carol Klein’s new RHS book, Grow Your Own Fruit (Mitchell Beazley).

Grow Your Own Open Weekend – 7 – 8 March 2009

For one day only there will be free entry for all on Saturday 7 March to celebrate the start of the Grow Your Own Weekend, which continues until Sunday 8 March (normal garden entry applies on Sunday). The main event will be held in the Hillside Event Centre, featuring displays, talks on how to get started and a live cookery demonstration, whilst further talks and demonstrations on soil digging, tree pruning and much more will happen at various locations around the garden. Free children’s activities plus children’s characters Snip and Clip will be taking place in the garden, plus celebrity chef Peter Osbourne will be demonstrating healthy options that children can make. Seasonal menus in the café and restaurant will further add to the tasty highlights on offer over the weekend.

The Plant Centre will also be holding two talks daily, led by expert RHS Garden Staff. A new Recycled Tools for Schools Scheme inviting visitors to donate old garden tools for schools will also be launched, with discount vouchers given in return for new tools purchased from the Plant Centre.

Berrylicious Weekend – 18 – 19 July 2009

A new event for Wisley to highlight the Wisley fruit collection and abundance of different fruit growing in the Model Fruit and Vegetable Garden. Visitors can enjoy tastings, walks and displays on a wide variety of soft fruit including raspberries, gooseberries, blackberries, blueberries and in particular, strawberries.

Jim Arbury, Fruit Superintendent at RHS Garden Wisley explains, “The luscious strawberry will act as the centre piece to this year’s set of Wisley events. They are easy to grow, ideal for containers and small gardens with limited space, and children are fascinated by them. Ingrained in peoples’ consciousness, the strawberry conjures up nostalgic thoughts of summer tea parties with lashings of cream and with this in mind we hope to inspire the nation to give growing them, and other fruit, a try.
