Spacing tomatoes in a greenhouse

This is a follow-on to what JB said about spacing potatoes in the 'Winter Veg' thread I have a 12x8 greenhouse. I put a single line of tomatoes and cucumbers all round the outside and a double row of peppers and aubergines in the middle, effectively creating a path all round the middle block. I real...

Thanks, plumpudding - i'll try that. Sunblush tomatoes are the semi-dried ones you get in delis and supermarkets. They're still soggy and have olive oil and herbs. Don't know if it's an americanism but when we lived in Oz a few years ago that's what they were called there. It's quite straightforward...

cherry tomatoes

For various reasons, this year I've got far too many cherry tomatoes. As well as giving them away, what else can I do with them? I feel there's a bit too much skin per tomato for sauces, or doesn't that matter? Any ideas?

I found that Marmande was the first of my varieties to get blight in the past and have stopped growing them. But I grow Ferline outdoors and always get a good heavy crop which, as I said earlier, is very blight resistant. I wouldn't give up yet. As regards blighted ones, last year I did various thin...

I've certainly found Ferline to be 'resistant' but not 'proof'. Last year I picked off tomatoes as soon as they got the first sign of blight, similarly with the leaves, and they struggled on until the middle of September, giving a reasonable crop - possibly 1/2 to 2/3. All my other outdoor varieties...

Thanks everyone. I've been letting chery tomatoes sprawl when they hit the greenhouse roof and cut off whatever droops down. They do tend to get rather small after a while, though. I'll leave outdoor for another couple of trusses. I'm not too keen on green tomato chutney but I do have a rather nice ...

I've grown Jersey Devil from plants of Distinction for 3 years now. They're very dense and heavy with a good flavour. I've also dried them and kept them in olive oil, 'sunblush' style.

No blight so far in the Cambridge area. We haven't had much warm, humid weather - either wet and cold or warm and dry.

Stopping tomatoes

How many trusses should you have on a tomato plant before stopping it? I thought 4 for outdoor and 6 for greenhouse but am wondering if this is a bit conservative when we've been having mild autumns. Any views on this?

Saving broad beans

I am trying saving my own broad bean seeds this year for the first time. I left several pods on the plants after I'd picked the rest and left them to dry naturally without watering them. I looked at a couple yesterday and found they had rotted inside the pod. It has rained a bit recently. Have I don...

Thanks for the replies. I've put leeks after early potatoes as well, and some space will be needed for overwintering onions and garlic. I think I'll try winter tares, ryegrass and phacelia on different patches and see how I get on.

How to fill a space

This year I've got enough cleared ground to have an empty space where my potatoes have been, where the onions and garlic have been, and shortly where the broad beans have been. Any ideas what I should grow there? I'm thinking of green manures but not sure which is the best sort to try. Any advice we...
