Re: Wartime food memories
I now feel very young as I was born when the war was over! It's a while since that happened so thank you? I still remember pink blancmange though - ours was made in a rabbit shaped mould. Spam fritters also made it into school dinner days in the 60's

Re: Disappointing quinces.
The trees can't be that old, I can pick all the fruit by standing underneath, no need for a ladder or picker. Or are they naturally dwarf trees? I looked on Google and it appears that a couple of them did have it, I just had no idea what it was so chucked one out and cut out a few bad bits. I didn'...

Re: Allotment projects
I'll never get involved in an allotment association again. Talk about being piggy in the middle and being blamed and abused on one side and on the other side people keeping their head down and forgetting they promised to support you. Good Luck with it!

Re: Disappointing quinces.
From what I've read older trees aren'r as susceptible so if you have baskets of fruit maybe it is a more established tree and the fruit will be OK. I'm guessing the better root system of an older tree helps.

Re: Do ladies appreciate sharp knives ?
We have a couple of those permanently sharp knives - Are they ceramic ? I have often wondered about those and a search on the internet shows them to be excellent if you accept they are very brittle. If you damage the blade I think you have to send them away. Yes ? No not ceramic but stainless steel...

Disappointing quinces.
We have a quince tree on our plot which this year had the largest number of quinces we have harvested since planting. I was really dsappointed when most of the fruit had bitter pit which was only evident when I peeled them. I am assuming this year's weather conditions contributed to this - anyone el...

Re: Greenhouse perspex!
One problem is that if you replace large sheets of glass with perspex it flexes and often blows out in windy weather. We got over this by adding extra wooden strips glued across the perspex to produce extra sort of glazing bars. Doesn't answer your question but something you may want to be aware of

We have a couple of those permanently sharp knives - the ones they demonstrate by cutting a groove in metal and I bought them so the answer to the original question is ... in my case yes!

Our kiwi Issai had spider mite every year since we planted it but no mites this year so it could be coincidence I'm afraid.

I'm really thinking of something other than raspberries as I have another part of the plot earmarked for new raspberries.

What fruit is immune to raspberry root rot
Our summer fruiting raspberries died as a result of what we think was raspberry root rot Phytophthora. We can't plant new raspberries in this area now so need to think of an alternative. Does anyone know if a blackberry would survive there (I'm guessing it is too closely related to raspberries), or ...
