Can I suggest we all forward the link to friends and colleagues.

I doubt the demand will be met, but any pressure to move the government in the right direction can only be a good thing.

Some discussion of how to fit the allotment in with the rest of your life. Just as a way to help people succeed and not be put off in the first year. Perhaps explored by asking a whole range of allotmenteers: How much time does it take, Tips for time/labour saving, shared and group allotments Which ...

The drowning weeds do stink, but I keep the lids on, and stir them while holding my breath. When it comes to forking the stuff out into the compost, I wait till no one else is around and work fast. I have heard whispers that NATO is looking into the possible contravention of chemical weapon producti...

I have three dustbins with lids that I use as 'drowning bins', anything with seeds or pernicious roots goes in. I use the bins in sequence, so when the last one is full I fork the contents of the first into the compost between layers of green stuff. Frankly anything that survives that treatment is a...

Thanks June,

It sounds as if we do the supports in a similar way, but yours are taller. I'll have to add an extension on top, maybe string between the supporting cans will do.

You could also try mangetout peas (I've tried Oregon Sugar Pod, Golden Sweet and Wegisser) They all grow really tall, my favourite of these is Oregon Sugar Pod. Good luck, June Hi June, Err, just how tall do Oregon Sugar Pod get? I've previously grown carouby de mausanne on a 1.2m piece of fencing ...

I wouldn't argue with the last post, but if you are reluctant to use glyphosate then it is do-able, it will just take longer to get weed free. To supplement whatever digging and weeding you can do use a lot of black plastic or woven fabric, and smother weeds in any area not being used. You can also ...

I'd put the posh ones in the garden to match your colour scheme and leave a note on the allotment gate asking for nasturtiam seed. They are very prolific once they get going and I'm sure someone will be happy to give you a handful of seeds left from last year. You then have no dilemma, put them in an...

Seeing as they are 'introducing' the other characters on the allotment, it might be good if they went round asking people how much time they spent, and how they fit it round their lives. Might give a little forewarning to potential plot holders of what it takes. Still I hope that the programme does ...

My gym membership bod laughed when I said i was giving up my membership as I'd rather be down my allotment now its light in the evenings - not the usual excuse I imagine. I will probably go back in the autumn to the mindless exercise, as the allotment association refuses to install floodlights - soo...

Dear JB,
thats a good tip about the flowers, but at that time I hadn't enough space to allow anything two years. Now maybe will try sowing some in a less used space on the boundary and see whether they make it to flowering in 2010.

Hi madasfish,

No harm done, I don't mind being a muppet so long as its Miss Piggy.

I also wish we had more like the late Mrs Dunwoody.

Dear madasafish, sorry if you think I'm being a muppet for suggesting that people vote on a short termist basis, i think I'm just reporting what I see. A local council offered it constituents a choice of levels of council tax, explaining which (major)cuts to services would be needed to support the l...
