Re: potting on blueberry bush

Good idea, I can see it working. I know many people are successful if they keep them in pots. It does allow you to create the exact soil requirements. I am part way through building a dedicated raised bed for my blueberries. They are in pots at the moment but I want them to have more root room now a...

Re: Composting nuts

Aaahh... yes, we have a few! Kev & I enjoy 1 or 2 bottles of red most evenings, the number of corks soon mount up over time. If a bottle of wine is not the absolute cheapest it normally has a real cork. I first started putting corks in the compost (4 separate composts) a while back in the hope t...

Re: potting on blueberry bush

Hi JB, I have been wanting to reply since Tues but have been unable to.

I have never thought of the PH of sand...it just did not enter my head! I will check with my supplier next time I purchase.

Blueberry bushes are covered in nice new buds now. :D

Re: Snow - Feeding the birds

Hi JB, Ingenious system! :)
I make small ones (in the winter) to put out, the mould being any plastic container that I am about to throw away.

I wonder how many people that are into growing veg are vegetarians and do not have a supply of fat for the birds surplus from their own cooking.

Re: Life can be sweet when selfish b---s get what they deserve.

....nobody would find it acceptable if someone took their dog into the supermarket and allowed it to relieve itself all over the fruit and veg.

Like my neighbours cats do on mine. I remove 3-4 poos a day from my veg. And I have plenty of measures in place! :(

Re: Snow

Lovely job for a crispy cold day OH The effort keeps you nice and warm! Mucking out is so satisfying, the smell of the fresh straw, and then the fresh hay when you fill up the nets.... And steaming warm horses. Did you do some grooming as well or just mucking out? You will find straw where you never...

Re: Snow

It was our turn to be hit hard by snowfall in Devon & Cornwall last night! There were plenty of people stuck on our two main trunk roads all last night in their cars. To the South of Dartmoor A38 (Chudleigh to Haldon hill) they were finally rescued by the Dartmoor Rescue Teams (taken to local vi...

Re: Composting nuts

It appears to be the same with corks from wine bottles. The real ones being bark from the Cork tree will break down eventually but it may take forever. I now burn them (they make great firelighters) or I use them in the bottom of big pots to make the pot lighter to move around (instead of polystyren...

Re: Snow

Anne....Did you speak too soon? Are you getting enough snow NOW!. I usually look out towards your direction (Bodmin moor) and seen for miles, all is a whiteout at present! Snowing very heavy here in SE Cornwall right now. Huge flakes, very pretty. We've told our guys to stay home. The paint froze on...

Re: Florence (Bulb?) Fennel

Anne on the crop rotation info on the RHS site it mentions Fennel as a 'can be fitted in anywhere in the rotation'. I was reading it yesterday. Can't vouch for their info, but I hope they would get it right. It was the same site that said drill the holes in the pea gutters! Which I understand why no...

Re: Snow - Feeding the birds

Do you have a large sun umbrella that normally goes over your summer table?
As long as it is not too windy of course.
