Re: Things still flowering
We have 2 fuchsias still in full bloom one of which is in a very exposed place at the bottom of the front drive with no shelter at all. The one in the back garden is in a border where there are helebores flowering and primroses. The best flower at the moment is Nicotiana Langsdorfii (The one with th...

Srelitzia with white fungus on roots.
My wife has a Strelitzia (bird of paradise flower) in a pot which has been outside all summer and is now in the greenhouse (cold) awaiting coming back into the house. Somewhere along the way it has developed small, white fungus fruiting bodies on the exposed roots. My question is; Is it worth bringi...

Re: Hydroponics
Ken the greenhouse is on the patio where it is close and convenient for the house. Having decided to try hydroponics, my daughters are buying me 2 solar units for Christmas presents. I have paid and hope to get the money back later. The 2 units have arrived and now I just have to store them till nex...

Re: Will ye no come back again?
Alan I think it is probably just natural wastage. I have looked at several forums over the last couple of years with a view to possibly joining but too often if you check latest posting dates they are 3 or 4 years ago so not worth joining. I also think that it doesn't help if people trying to give a...

Is this long warm, damp autumn bad news for next year?
Having seen very few large slugs and even fewer snails all summer after the dry spring, I am now getting a mass of baby slugs and snails which are growing apace in this warm, damp weather we are having. If this weather continues for much longer will will be likely to have a very bad spring/summer fo...

Re: Magpies
I have not seen or heard Magpies since the start of the year so locally I think they haven't done well here. We do have lots of Jackdaws and several Crows. Unfortunately I haven't seen or heard any Song Thrushes since early spring whereas 2 years ago they were regularly smashing the snails on our co...

Re: BigBiocharExperiment
Colin I followed the gwpf link and was quite disappointed. They say "The Global Warming Policy Foundation is unique. We are an all-party and non-party think tank and a registered educational charity which, while open-minded on the contested science of global warming .........." However The...

Peter the following wiki link explains. It also explains Colin's "too good to be true" comment as well as how biochar production differs from charcoal production.

Alan a possible explanation: A stats timing issue. 1. user logs in add 1 to registered users in stats 2. user browses a profile - add to stats 3 user starts a reply - record this in stats 4 user is timed-out before completing reply or any other browse action - registered user count reduced by one bu...

Re: Field Mice
I accidentally found the perfect way to catch mice in the house. At a flat I was sharing a long time ago, we heard a mouse under the fridge. My flat mate got the broom handle and rattling it around underneath disturbed the mouse who ran for its escape hole in the skirting board. I stuck out my leg t...

Re: BigBiocharExperiment
Johnboy You should take part in this trial. Let me explain. If the only people who take part are those who "know in advance" it's going to work then the result will be a foregone conclusion as a resounding success. Whereas if people like yourself who have a different point of view take par...

Re: BigBiocharExperiment
According to the wiki article on biochar the term was in use in 2006 - Lehmann 2007a (ref 4) before the Peter Read article of 2009 (ref 7). An inconsistency in the article. The trial offers a free bag of the biochar to use. Lots of people buy soil improver products and this Oxford University study i...

Re: Field Mice
You could use a humane trap. I used one to get rid of house mice last year. You bait the trap with chocolate and when the mouse enters it drops a door behind it and can't get out. I then took them a distance away to an open area to release.

Re: BigBiocharExperiment
It would be good if you read the description properly before making spurious comments.
Quote:
What is biochar?
Biochar is a carbon-rich product, created by the slow burning of plant material with little or no oxygen.
That doesn't sound like slash and burn to me.
