Re: Why on earth did I plant 6 blackcurrant bushes???????

Dear Vivien, as soon as it stops raining I am going to pick mine and sling them into some alcohol. Then I have an instant topping for ice cream or a milk pud in winter. I have not done this before so I shall have a small experiment and see which booze makes them taste nicest. Vodka, brandy or cassis...

Re: pickle shallots

Dear Anthony, it is best to let them dry before pickling. If they are too juicy and green they will dilute the vinegar and they will not keep nearly so well. That said if you want to slice some into vinegar and use them within a couple of days they will be perfectly fine. If you wish you can do cucu...

Dear Alan,
it is perfect for sweeping up the drunks in the city centres at the weekends. It would save the police from having to get their hands dirty!

Dear Brenjon
Gherkins are small cucumbers, NOT courgettes! They are juvenile outdoor ridge cucumbers. Try www.recipes4all.com they seem to have recipes for just about everything.

Re: flymo mowers

Dear BB, I have used both and imho the allen is the better machine. A trick we used to do in the early eighties (in those days before the birth of 'Elf and his annoying chums) on very steep banks was to tie off the deadman's handle with rope and dangle the machine on another rope and swing it like a...

Dear All,
I think it was written by the fishing chap Issak Walton. I cannot confirm this but the quote must be out there somewhere.

Re: WATER WATER NOT A DROP.........

Dear All,
since April 1st we have had a grand total of 5mm of rain here in Cambridge. So I think it must have been my prayer mat involved. Strictly speaking the garden kneeler, those weeds just won't come out when it is so dry.

Re: Milton Bryan hit by mini tornado.

Dear Geoff, the reason why walled gardens work is because if you looked beyond the walls there is usually lots of trees forming the windbreak proper. The walls on many of these gardens did not go all the way round. They were put up to grow fruit against to start with. Walls act as storage heaters an...

Re: NETTING RECOMMENDATION

Dear Compo, it is better if you can "sew" the pieces together. If you can lay your hands on some of the plastic string and a good fat darning needle this will make a better job. Better in two ways, first there will be no gaps for those pesky flutterbys to flap through and second because th...
