Get a cat.
They will defend their territory (your garden)
Oh....ok, maybe not with your OH's allergy
My sympathies. In one house I lived in, we put hoops of netting over the beds in the front garden and the cats just did it on top of the netting

Re: Buzzards Galore
Guess numbers of all species rise and fall over time. 20 years ago, the one bird you could almost guarantee seeing on a motorway trip was a kestrel. I see far fewer of these now, and at various points along the M4 now a Red Kite is more likely (esp. around Reading). In the meantime, Buzzards also se...

Re: Please can we have some more 'funnies'?
Hi All, with apologies to the natural blonds amongst you, I thought this was quite a good one. A blond arrived at the Golden Gates and on meeting St Peter asked to enter Heaven. St Peter said; "Heaven is suffering from an overload of godly souls and we have been forced to put up an Entrance Exa...

Thank you everyone, report duly lodged.
The police wanted a separate report from each person affected, which ties in with what Peter said.

Re: Buzzards Galore
My wife agrees with you Myrkk. However now that numbers are getting back towards normal, they are taking some of the birds to re-introduce into other places. Quite a lot of Welsh Kites have been taken to Eire in the last 10 years. However, once there many died, we're poisoned or shot, so it's a slow...

Re: Cooking with wine
Very important when cooking with wine to ensure the glass stays within easy reach.
However keep the bottle out of sight, or it's possible to lose interest in cooking altogether & just end up dialling up a pizza delivery

How to combat vandalism?
For the third time this year, my plot has had someone wantonly ripping down my Pea Canes or ripping up a mini mesh tunnel. They never seem to trample or nick the veg - just delight in wrecking stuff. Yesterday they had pushed over two people's sheds! These allotments are next to a busy path, and a f...

Re: Watercress for winter
As a second-best option, Land Cress can work quite well. I grew some 2 years ago and it cropped for a long tome and tasted good. I've just got some seedlings started again. One thing that suits my garden is that it loves a dark, shaded border where little else will grow, saves me weeding it and give...

Re: Buzzards Galore
Good news from all of you. I'm very lealous of those of you in Wales or near the borders. It takes me 2 hours to drive to my favourite spots in the Brecons/Black mts. In the mean time, there are buzzards in the woods nearby, but they have turned into circling specs by the time they go over our house...

Re: Nettle and ramsons soup
Yes, Alan, I'd give it a go, but probably using last years garlic since I don't know a reliable source of ransoms. I persuaded my very sceptical wife to try ravioli stuffed with nettles & shallots a few years ago. Like Tony she was partly concerned they would taste awful and found it hard to put...

Don't some varieties also contain some milk powder too? Mind you I like my DC sweet, so 75% sugar would suit me (and send me to a diabetic early grave )

Re: Best source of Frost warnings
To add insult to injury, I didn't check the forecast because it was still 12C in Bristol at 10pm last night (though clear & starry).
And this morning, the frost was glinting in the early sun. Looks like problem will go away by the weekend though

Re: Best source of Frost warnings
Thanks to everyone for their comments. I tend to agree with Monika that many of these sites quote information that can vary for any given day. But then a forecast is only an educated guess Johnboy, when I looked out of the window at 7am today, it was cold but not frozen. By the time I went outside, ...

Sounds like having a horse tethered by the plot might do the trick.
Just need to get the right end of the horse pointing towards the plot....
