Re: Glorious Spring Bits and Bobs.

Whoppee! Dug my shorts out of their winter mothball storage and gave my pale legs a touch of sunshine! . And finally managed to get a coat of wood stain on a fence - a chore which has been pending all winter because it,s always been too wet to coat it. Everything is so far behind on the planting fro...

Wildflower turf

A friend of mine has got so fed up with her council not cutting the verge outside her house that she's decided to turn it into a proper wildflower verge and is ordering specialist turf with which to replace the current grass. I gather she's had to apply for special council permission to do this. I'm...

Re: Glorious Spring Bits and Bobs.

I use a a combination of Reddle and Google Calendars which synch on my iPad and phone which allows me to enter sowing dates in perpetuity, e.g. on April 4th every year it reminds me to “sow tomatoes” or whatever. ( It,s also a good reminder for recording birthdays, insurance premium renewal dates, e...

Re: Glorious Spring Bits and Bobs.

Asks the slugs Diane ! They probably have their favourite plant flavours! Lilies? hostas? I have several pots outdoors which are in a similar state which contain hostas so your post has reminded me that a sprinkling of slug pellets on their bare surfaces will not come amiss as I expect shoots to sta...

Re: Glorious Spring Bits and Bobs.

My April Birdtrack email reminds me that cuckoos should be arriving any time now. Sadly our regular one just didn,t return to its breeding patch at the back of our garden about four years ago and no new birds have arrived since to replace it so its presence is sorely missed. Its arrival, like the fi...

Re: Railways and allotments

Sadly if you had those kind of growing facilities on platforms these days, everything would be stolen overnight when it was at ripening stage !

Re: Railways and allotments

Long may the connection continue! I think a lot of people in the past whose gardens backed onto railway lines have used the embankments behind their gardens as unofficial allotments too

Mini greenhouse - which type of cover is best?

I,ve had a heavy duty green reinforced plastic cover over my mini greenhouse all winter. In the past I’ve used a clear transparent one for spring & summer use but am faced with the need to replace a badly damaged transparent one. However I’m consciously trying to reduce my use of plastic and won...

Re: Bean/Pea Frame

If growing peas and beans in adjacent locations I’d also be wary of using netting for the peas. As plum pudding has suggested, netting can be very difficult to untangle and if there,s a risk that some bean plants will stray “off territory” and also mingle with the pea netting you will get into a ter...

Re: (Delayed) Spring 2018

This has obviously involved a lot of hard physical work so well done on getting it to this state. Bet you’re itching to get stuff sown and planted now so you can reap some dividends.

Re: (Delayed) Spring 2018

First picking of forced rhubarb today. There's always something of a ritual about this, being the first crop of Spring, rather like the long awaited first picking of asparagus, not that I have enough space grow any of that. Having it gently stewed with orange and stem ginger. I love the bright pink ...

Re: (Delayed) Spring 2018

Eureka! We actually managed to get the lawns cut today and the edges trimmed. Garden looks much tidier now but shocked how much moss has accumulated over this wet winter. Plenty to spare for the birds’ nesting materials. Wonder if they could all be trained to come down and pull it all out !

Re: Blight?

Seems too early for blight as there would be little planted outdoors at this time of year whose spores could drift inside. Wonder if it,s some kind of fungus caused by being too close to condensation on windows? I’d keep the two varieties as far apart as you can and just monitor. I’d be a little war...

Re: (Delayed) Spring 2018

that made me smile Robo. With all that rain coming down I wonder that Noah had time to sex all his paired animals before he got them onto the Ark. I be there were a few mistakes. I hope no Water utility is contemplating a hosepipe ban this summer. I should imagine by the time the current rainf...
