Re: Late Winter Bits and Bobs - 2018

Yea, biting wind not nice for weeding so have allowed common sense to prevail and am settling for a library book. Spent 30 minutes outdoors earlier so did get a tiny dose of Vitamin D to help battle a current streaming cold. Am opting out of a group gathering this afternoon. Doesn,t seem sensible to...

Re: Late Winter Bits and Bobs - 2018

Oh gosh Pa, you have reminded me that our charity fund raising marmalade making marathon could be about to start any minute. I haven,t seen any Sevilles around yet. We didnt make any last year and are currently halfway down our last jar at home so I think it,s going to be all hands to the pump again...

Re: Basil and home made pesto

Alas OH, the offending jar and its contents have now been binned so I suspect we will never know the answer.

Re: Late Winter Bits and Bobs - 2018

The only rule I know about locating bird boxes is to fix them high enough so cats can,t easily get at them and to try and have them facing away from the sun, ie on the north side of a tree etc if possible so that baby birds don!t get baked from the rays of the sun if it gets too hot

Re: Late Winter Bits and Bobs - 2018

Email from DT Brown saying Time to sow your Tomato seeds! I would have thought that even for growing in a greenhouse this was a little optimistic ! I,d normally be starting my chilli and pepper seeds off now on an indoor wiindow sill for growing outdoors but only because they’re such slow germinator...

Basil and home made pesto

Seeking some advice here because we’re trying to solve a mystery. My husband has been twice struck down with a dose of compylobacter in recent months and the source of its original has been hugely puzzling because we haven’ t been to foreign climes, eaten in dodgy restaurants, and our food is nearly...

Re: Late Winter Bits and Bobs - 2018

Monika, I know your sparrows must be a bit of a nuisance but I rather envy you as we haven,t seen a sparrow in our garden for many, many years which seems strange considering they’re such a common bird. And we must have seen only a couple of greenfinches in recent years which must be due to this dis...

Re: Early Winter Bits and Bobs....

My husband snaffled up a huge bag of "slightly imperfect" yellow, red and orange peppers in the supermarket today (although I couldn't see anything wrong with them and would have been happy to produce similar specimens) for less cost than it would be to purchase the potting compost in whic...

Re: Early Winter Bits and Bobs....

They certainly look very sturdy Pa. I imagine that when filled with soil they will withstand a battering from even the fiercest gales. When I was kneeling down yesterday weeding all the couch grass from my strawberry bed I was thinking that something higher up would be a distinct advantage. Do hope ...

Re: Early Winter Bits and Bobs....

My husband helped me dig out one of the compost cages this morning - a physical job that I hate to admit is getting too physically hard for me these days, so most of that has now been dumped on the vegetable patch and borders ready for spreading later. A by product was harvesting about five pounds o...

Re: Early Winter Bits and Bobs....

After a second day of feasting today I have a feeling my constitution will have had enough over indulgence and some exercise will be needed - digging out the compost heap calls. Only wish I could have had a Duracell energy pack for Christmas to give me a kickstart. My excuse, like pa’s is that every...

Re: Childhood memories of Christmas.

Greetings all. I can remember the struggle to put up the Christmas tree. The lights would invariably never work first time and my dad somehow always forgot to test them first before draping them around the tree so that was always quite a performance. Incidentally two things you can do with those min...
