What grows locally? From memory Silver Birch, Juniper and Scots Pine would be the natives. Anything the Forestry Commission plant in similar areas would grow. Good try! But wrong hemisphere. What grows locally? Not a lot - which is why I'm after new ideas (there are no native trees). Some macrocarp...

Hmm - well that's where it gets tricky. It will be a couple of acres - though I don't need to shelter it all. Most tender veggies will be grown in polytunnels. Trees on the whole do not do to well as it is too windy and a bit on the dry side (I'm sure that there must be trees that would do well - ju...

Re: Tomato & Peppe Inspration
Hey Forum, I grew a variety of yellow toms last year for the visual impact and was v. dissapointed with the flavour. What vars give the best flavour? That happened to me with yellow toms too - I think they were "sungold" - looked good - tasted of nothing. Last year I grew Tom Shirley and ...

Shelter belt planting - any ideas?
In the not so distant future we will be moving to a new location. It's very windy with peaty soil and not that wet. Does anyone have any suggestion for shelter belt plantings to help give shelter to plants and shrubs - I was thinking there might be a bamboo that would work but am open to any suggest...

Tigerella tomatoes - worth growing?
Well - along with my xmas present of a KG subscription was a packet of Tigerella tom seeds on this month's KG. I have a vague recollection of reading somewhere they are not very tasty (the toms - not the seeds), anyone any experience? I'm also trying a new (to me) variety this year of "Red Bran...

Thanks I will do - I'm in Berkshire. If it was drought related - would not copious watering at the first signs of trouble resolve it? As for tree choice... we need something evergreen but not too dense.... and preferrable reasonably fast growing. Can't think of anything except eucalyptus that fits t...

Jerusalem artichokes.
When should these be harvested?
I've grown them before and we harvested them in the early winter and they, erm, had , erm, dire side effects. Now someone told me you need to harvest them before or after frosts.... but I cannot remember which.
Any thoughts?

What can I sew now?
Up until now I have only grown some traditional summer stuff, and am a bit perplexed as to what can be grown for other seasons....
Is there anything I can sew now for autumn/winter/spring harvest?

Thanks for the replies Basically the leaves are drying out, browning then dropping, even this years new growth. THis is the same thing that happened to the first one - though when we dug it up we found that the root ball had never expanded from when it had been in the pot. If its drought (we have be...
