Leeks rule!
Considering I hated leeks as a child this is quite a statement - but leeks absolutely rule!
Not only have they proved easy to grow but despite thick snow and cold weather they are fine. I picked a leek yesterday and apart from a few floppy outer leaves it was it in perfect condition.

What to do about garlic?
I was planning to plant some garlic in the borders this week, but alas 'snow stopped play'
Can I still plant the garlic out until the snow goes, or have I left it too late?

erm, I hate to say this but I have grown garlic from a supermarket bulb with great success this year. In fact from one bulb I had more than 20 decent sized bulbs.

Re: Squash
For the second year I have had no luck with squashes or pumpkins I just don't know where am I going wrong! The seeds germinate fine and then the subsequent plants look healthy, but the problem is the fruits either rot off (whether I put straw down or not), or I end up with all male flowers. Does any...

Re: Squashed bay tree!
Oh thank goodness for that I had been so concerned because I grew that tree from a little plant over 5 years, but thought following the damage that that might be it.
I shall follow your tips about pruning the new shoots etc.

Squashed bay tree!
During some recent gales my poor bay tree which had finally grown to a decent size and was going all pom pom, was hit by a large metal pole(!) The tree is OK except for the branches at the middle of the pom pom were cut away.
What should I do to help the bay tree to bush out again?

Re: What to sow next?
Great stuff everyone
I am pleased not to have to leave the bed empty, not just because this is unproductive but because it wouldn't look nice

What to sow next?
I recently dug up a load of first early potatoes (very satisfying it was too!), and now have an empty section in the raised bed.
Is there anything I could grow there in the meantime, or do I have to leave this bed empty until next Spring?

Re: Raised beds
Thankyou for all the tips and information. At the gardening club we managed to top up one of the raised beds using top soil taken once a nasty shrub no one liked was removed. The soil underneath was beautifully crumbly so we added some of that instead of buying extra top soil/compost. Also I hadn't ...

Raised beds
I help out at a gardening club where there is a raised bed system. I was wondering what to do about the level of soil/compost in the beds? The thing is we have planted cabbages, potatoes etc in various beds but now the soil/compost level has sunk down quite a bit. I am concerned this will affect the...

Re: Chelsea flower show.
I do wish the BBC coverage would be less repetitive and not to always concentrate on the same few gardens. Also it is a shame none of the main show gardens featured a lawn. And why do so many of them look like hotel lobbies what with all the concrete, glass panels, and metal? Right rant over! I thou...
