Sooty mold on runner beans

Although my runner beans have nearly finished a couple of plants have suddenly decided to produce quite a few flowers and as they are self-pollinated they are also starting to produce beans. However, in the last couple of days the leaves of most of the plants which have finished have suddenly become...

Re: Pea problem

The same problem seems to have affected some tomato plants that I was given as my Marshalls order was very late arriving. These were, I think, from the same nursery (will have to check) as the peas and had suffered through neglect so needed some TLC before planting out. I actually put 4 of them in g...

Re: Pea problem

Hi Colin - thanks. However, I think he is wrong. I have grown peas for many, many years and have never seen them finish like that. And I don't think they ever really got properly started.

Re: Pea problem

Whatever the problem was with the 3 varieties of Peas - Early Prelado, Early Onward, Hurst Greenshaft - it has not affected with of the two Broad Bean varieties I grew next to them - Vroma (Meteor) and Aqadulce Claudia, as today I picked the first crop of well-filled pods with the promise of far mor...

Re: Pea problem

Thanks Monika and Geoff. But no lack of water and the foliage is perfectly healthy except around the flowers where it is slightly stunted. It is the flowers that appear but do not open and shrivel up. Looking at the runners this morning a bit afraid they might be affected.

Pea problem

I have a row of peas, Early Prelado, Early Onward and Greenshaft - just a small number of each. I bought the Early Prelado from a nursery in an attempt to get an early crop, which I did. However, the pea flowers started to shrivel and failed to open so I pulled them up and the others progressed ok, ...

Cut and Come again Lettuce

I have sown a non-heading variety of Lettuce. What is the best way of harvesting them? Should I take constantly take out a few of the outer leaves or maybe, as I saw in one video, do a horizontal chop midway across the plant?

Lettuce Thermo-inhibition

I am sure this has been covered before, but I couldn't find it in a search. I rather foolishly sowed some lettuce seeds April 2nd in my greenhouse and it has been too hot for them to germinate - I believe anything over 80F will inhibit them. I can't remember whether it is a simple matter of putting ...

grenadier apples

Apparently they don't store too well. A bit unfortunate as I have a good crop but am away tomorrow until 19th Sept and we don't have the time to make them into apple puree before then. Some of them have fallen and are in the shed and I have picked a few which came away easily. Wondering if I should ...

Swede storage

Although the previous replies, including my own(!) have said to leave them in the ground and lift as necessary, doing this hasn't really worked that well for me these past 2 or 3 years as they get attacked by slugs and are likely to rot from underneath. So my wife wants me to lift them before the we...

Re: Peat free composts

I think it's fair to say most bags of compost sold these days are rubbish, or at least 50% seems to be bits of twigs and other uncomposted rubbish. I am using a 120lt bag of Verve multipurpose compost from B&Q which is 58% peat and I have been impressed by it. Unlike most composts that I have u...

Peat free composts

Hi guys - a long time since I last posted. Not doing as much gardening as I used to. But on Friday I shall be going to a talk on peat free composts. Doing a search I found a comment by Johnboy from a couple of years ago which basically said they were still rubbish. So I wondered what the latest thou...
