Re: Strange Sweetcorn
I'd guess that somewhere some seeds were mixed up. It looks at bit like this http://greenbarngardens.com/catalog/i22.html I think the coloured ones are often just grown for decorative qualities rather than to eat. By heck, that is very close. Looks like you might be right. Thanks Paul

No, as only one came on the plant, I want to keep the cob as is, grow the seed next year and see what turns up!

Strange Sweetcorn
From a batch of sweetcorn plants bought from a local garden centre, one developed a strange purple colouration. The plant concerned only yielded one cob and this is a picture of it. I know the maize in various parts of the world does produce different coloured seeds, but I assume the plant I grew ca...

Re: Nibbled leeks
I think you are right. A lot of young ones around at the moment and there may be a few small gaps in my fencing!! Didn't think they would like leeks and onions though!!

Poly Tunnels
I have a greenhouse on my allotment, but I am thinking of investing in a poly tunnel.
Any advice on the best one/ones to buy will be gratefully received.

Framberry
Picked up a Framberry plant today. My natural curiosity got the better of me! The selling point was it is 'a cross between a strawberry and a raspberry'. I take it the 'taste' is and not the actual plants that produce the fruits, as they both belong to a different genus. So, what is the origin of th...

Re: vanished beans
I have bean (here I go now) very impressed with the answers to this one. Was talking to a neighbouring allotment holder yesterday. They said they covered their sown seeds with house guttering. Should have asked exactly how they did it, but I assume it is upside down with end pieces in place to stop ...

Re: vanished beans
Ditto, same problem, I am pretty sure mice have consumed sown seeds in several places in my allotment, including the greenhouse. The small gaps I have in the greenhouse definitely make mice a main suspect! Is there any deterrent that can be applied as a soil dressing to stop them digging up seeds? M...

Re: Black Potatoes
Thanks very much for the information FelixLeiter. Much appreciated. You're welcome. Is that Spurn Point? Certainly is, one of my most favourite places. A photograph taken a number of years ago, before the paint started dropping off the lighthouse!! I picked up that you were located in good ole 'Eas...

Black Potatoes
Came across a 'black', all be it, dark purple potato variety in a fruit and veg shop in York last year. Kept them over the Winter and am growing them this year.
What is variety likely to be?
They were labelled, I think, with a French name. I should have written it down as I have forgotten it.

Re: Is this the place to say Hello ?
A bit of progress made. Other allotment holders have been very generous and given things to me to put it. There were also 'volunteers' (I think this is the term for things already on site, in the ground and growing). There were 3 or 4 varieties of potatoes coming through when I arrrived. Still await...
