Re: Spring Bits and Bobs.
I've not been well for the last fortnight due to the Covid finally catching up with me. Knocked me back I can tell you, I'm glad I had all the jabs they recommended. I'm feeling better but still short of breathe and getting fatigued but things are sort of progressing here, potatoes are all showing w...

Re: Spring Bits and Bobs.
Another dry yet windy day that allowed me to finally finish planting my potatoes. Nights feel cold which may explain why germination seems slow in the greenhouse. Blossom on my traditional Bramley and Cherry tree cheers me up.

Re: Spring Bits and Bobs.
I had a quiet day to day and just sowed some annual flower seeds in the greenhouse. I had a good day on Sunday the weather was fine and I was able to plant some more rows of potatoes after rotavating the ground but felt very tired today. Good to read that Clive had seen a Red Kite, I still get excit...

Re: Spring Bits and Bobs.
Very windy here today so I took the opportunity to mow the lawns. The grass was very long and my rotary mower cannot cope with long wet grass but the strong winds helped dry the grass so I could take a cut with the mower set at its highest. I also thought it a good idea so sow another row of parsnip...

Re: Spring Bits and Bobs.
Well when I awoke this morning it was not raining, I wonder how long that will last. Yesterday I collected some compost and learnt the reason for my favourite compost not being available was due to everyone buying up stocks before the restrictions on peat use come into effect, they had mountains of ...

Re: Spring Bits and Bobs.
Let's hope the weather is kind for you Westie together with all forum members and some gardening progress can be made. I had a goodish day to-day, in between the showers, and was able to plant most of my onion sets out. When it was raining I nipped inside my lean to glass/green house and belatedly p...

Re: Spring Bits and Bobs.
All's well that ends well Westie. I sowed some parsnips this evening, ground was wet and not ideal and seedbed was a little rough but I have to sow something this year. Caught a couple of annoying moles in the fields yesterday but will leave traps set for another week or so until I receive ewes and ...

Re: Spring Bits and Bobs.
You are way ahead of me also Westie, I spent last week at St Ives and visited a couple of NT gardens which was very enjoyable and the weather was good. It was nice to see the fields of daffodils and cauliflowers. I managed to do a little rotavating yesterday when it was windy, dry and sunny but toda...

Re: Large seed potatoes
I cannot add anything to what Westie has wisely said. The important thing to remember (as Westie says) is that you should only cut them at planting time not before.

Re: Late Winter Bits and Bobs.
Well I was a little disappointed today, I went into town and on course my old favourite Wilko is no more. I used to buy nets of many onion bulbs for next to nothing and they all grew into super onions that kept well and have loads left from last year's planting. I bought 100 bulbs from a local agric...

Re: Jack Hargreaves to return to Talking Pictures
Oh Westie! You must be referring to my favourite pin-ups of the era, namely Barbara Woodhouse and Fanny Cradock.
If so they were certainly bossy, Barbara being plainly bossy but there was a little menace, in Fanny's bossiness.
You certainly did what you were told by these two.

Re: Late Winter Bits and Bobs.
I spent time today chopping down an over grown Laurel bush, it was huge and I have plenty more Laurel bushes to clear. The grass on my lawns have grown extremely long and I have moved some sheep on them to eat it down. It is not going very well, although they are eating the grass they keep getting t...

Well done oldherbaceous, I was beginning to think that I was the only one who remembered Jack Hargreaves. Don't forget to tune in and relive the times when you were a lad enjoying our rural past.
Best wishes

Re: Jack Hargreaves to return to Talking Pictures
Well Westie, Jack lived in Dorset and was a legend to people interested in the countryside. My workmates and I used to spend our lunch times talking about his latest programme; we were all country people interested in fishing, hunting, shooting and farming. He was also a knowledgeable man on horses/...

Jack Hargreaves to return to Talking Pictures
At last some good news regarding a true countryside programme from the knowledgeable Jack Hargreaves, to be shown from 5th February at 6.30 pm, on Talking Pictures. https://www.oldtimereview.co.uk/out-of-town-talking-pictures/ He told it largely unscripted, with no irritating background muzak, as it...
