As Primrose says, it is coming up to hibernation time for frogs and toads. Last year, I found a couple buried in the soil, amongst the shrubbery in our back garden.
We have been digging the plot today and I unearthed three toads...fortunately unharmed.

How did we all do?
How did we do? In a word...erm..dire. This year is the worst we have had regarding crops growing, in the eleven years we've had our allotment. We have done well with potatoes, onions and beetroot. The brassicas.... all of them have been awful...they just sat there doing nothing at all from planting ...

Re: Olympics
I'm having withdrawal symptoms since the Games finished...me and Ken have never watched so much television since the 2012 Olympics. It was great to be able to put the telly on, knowing there was something good to watch! The bags under my eyes have developed bags from all the late nights as I just ha...

Re: Mid Summer Bits and Bobs.
Primrose, I have only one bush of Redcurrants and it had really excelled itself this year. Always a good cropper, the branches are bowed down with the weight of the fruit this year. I never really know what to do with them, other than using them to add pectin to low pectin fruits for jam. I don't li...

Re: Good day
Dear OH, indeed they do! I got a great deal of satisfaction from squishing that beetle! I'm not surprised you were affected by the heat, it's been exceptionally hot today....it makes me feel iffy when it's so hot. We went to the allotment after 8.30 to water up and there was a pleasant breeze gettin...

Re: Mid Summer Bits and Bobs.
Well, I must be barmy.....the hottest day of the year and I had to make jam. The trouble was, the blackcurrants wouldn't wait. I harvested a couple of pounds on Sunday night but the rest wasn't quite ripe enough.... yesterday's sun sorted that and I picked the rest Monday night....that's the lot I t...

Re: Decreasing fertility of growing land
I think they're stingy..... Our plot neighbours had huge compost bins full of good stuff. (we thought) About two years after we took our plot, having used our supply from the previous year, we were chuffed when our neighbours said we could use as much of their compost as we wanted. We duly had about...

Oh that's good to hear Pa! Our four year old grandaughter and her parents lived with us for three months last year when they came back from America to live here. She really enjoyed coming to the allotment with us, thrilled to bits by pulling carrots, harvesting cauli and calabrese, helping her Grand...

Hello Johnboy. I took Feverfew tablets for years after someone recommended them to me. They certainly worked for me, I took one tablet every morning and my migraine attacks were definitely lessened and not quite so intense when one did start. The tablets were pretty cheap...used to be £5 for 100 tab...

Re: Typical :(
Dan, I was referred to a consultant re the migraines, who prescribed some tablets to prevent them. I don't remember what they were but they made me feel dire, so I refused to take them. Someone recommended that I took Feverfew tablets....it might have been all in my mind but I got less migraines! I ...

Re: Typical :(
Hello Dan....oh my giddy aunt, you have my sympathy regarding the migraines. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy. When I got a right humdinger of a migraine, I was wiped out for three days. I am happy to say, the damn things have reduced in frequency and severity as I've got older. which is exact...
