is it ok to use saved potatoes for seed potatoes?

I only need a few of each variety and baulk at paying out for a kilo or more. I did have foliar blight last year but all the spuds in storage appear fine, firm, no sign of rotting and a few pale sprouts starting in places. Will they be secretly carrying blight? will I get a smaller yield than from '...

Re: Should I get opal or clear roof on my lean-to

Thanks for your thoughts, I think I'll go for the clear as low light levels in spring will mean leggy seedlings. I will however make sure there is a way of shading from inside - hooks or something to take some muslin drapes.

Cheers

Should I get opal or clear roof on my lean-to

The steps which lead down from my kitchen to my back door are covered over with a 'conservatory' which I use as a greenhouse for raising seedlings in spring and then growing on tomatoes, peppers etc later on. This is now rotten, and I'm planning to replace it with a upvc double glazed version. The c...

Re: Tomatillo seeds

Hi,
I can let you have a few bought seeds of purple tomatillo and some self saved ones.

I've been growing them for ten years now and even in the worst of summers you get a few pounds to make fantastic salsa.
Send me a PM with your address.

Chinese artichokes aka crosnes

Hiya, I've not been on here for ages, but now emerging from long dormancy and hope you don't mind a request for a few Chinese artichoke tubers to start me off on a new crop. (Can't eat the jerusalem variety which seem easy to find.) I'll post the spare seeds I have as soon as I've been through the t...

Re: Gardening Clubs

My Mum and Dad used to go on some of the trips organised by the National Trust - not cheap but they were well organised and they said that everyone was very friendly and made a point of talking to anyone there on their own.

Re: which climbing bean

Crosse de violette are my usual choice, they grow very fast and are very prolific - and they taste good too.

Do generally grow a second one each year but nothing else has come close so far....

has anyone had any success with 'yard long'? My plants didn't even get that big.

This was my first year growing peas and I was very pleased with the results. As it was an experiment I only gave a 1.2m row to them, with three rows of peas, the outer ones 'meteor' and 'Alderman' in the middle on a 1.6m mesh. I probably didn't plant them as densley as I could have - I put them in a...

Make some courgette pickle in pretty jars(Recipe in a KGM back issue). It'll taste fab with the cold turkey on boxing day, and no one need ever know you didn't grow ...

Stephen, lovely idea that watching someone else work, however the slaves in these parts are a rebelious lot and have nicked the deckchairs for themselves. Think I'll go down tomorrow evening and strim the weeds, that is always the biggest boost in the shortest time, and then see if the black birds h...

I have a tumbling tom in my lean to conservatory, and picked my first small tomatoe of the year today - incredibly sweet. Looking forward to the other hundred baby ones ripening.

This one is in a large hanging basket 18" or so across, grown on from a 3" pot I boughtback in early April.
