Hi I have grown sweet potatoes again this year and will probably cook them down and freeze but it would be nice to keep a few for baking. Has anyone any tips on preserving?

Poultry suppliers
Hi I am looking for a poultry supplier in the South of England who I can approach to export stock to the Channel Islands. Can anyone recommend a supplier? I'm looking for some POL black rocks or similar hybrid

Compost tumbler
Hi Have seen old posts on this subject but wondered if anyone had any recent experience on using the horizontal type of compost tumblers. I seem to generate a lot of good compost from cold heaps but reintroducing weed seeds to fertile ground is a problem and I wondered if this was a solution? Also a...

Re: Potatoes in compost heaps
I have often grown courgettes and squash in my compost heaps they generally do very well and keeping the heap moist seems to help with decomposition. The compost when I use it seems to be great, perhaps because it is such a large volume ( a cubic metre at least) the growing plants don't take out all...

Potatoes in compost heaps
I obviously managed to get a couple of small potatoes into my compost heap 2 years ago. Last year they produced some good foliage so I decided to leave them and see what they produced. Having emptied the compost heap last week I was amazed at the crop of potatoes, all clean and disease free and no s...

Re: Failed sweet potatoes
Not sure what to do about the slips I assume that you cut them off and place in compost. The slips I have received in the post had no material attached to them only the stem and few leaves. I have always grown them in sun-my previous crop outside did better but there was a hosepipe ban so they were ...

Failed sweet potatoes
Can anyone offer any insight? I grew 2 differnt types of sweet potato last year in a poly tunnel in the Channel Islands. They were planted through black membrane to conserve moisture and fed with a tomoto feed and we had plenty of warm sun. They did produce loads of foliage but no more than a handfu...

Re: dehydrators and plums/prunes
Dried chillies are good. The tomatoes were mixed result. The medium sized tomatoes I sliced as thinly as I could but it said to halve the cherry tomatoes and dry as halves. The slices dried beautifully with a fantastic flavour-we ate a lot beforethey got into the jar! The cherry tomatoes were not dr...

Re: Runner Beans
I have only ever frozen runner beans after slicing and blanching. I have never seen any information about freezing whole or not blanching. Why don't you try a small batch before you go away?

Storing carrots
Hi. I have a good crop of clean carrots at the moment and want to store them in a sand box. Can I start now or is it too early? Also do you wash them first or just let them dry and remove any loose earth?

Re: dehydrators and plums/prunes
Have just bought a 5 tray Excalibur and am using it for the first time today. It is quite large so you need to store it somewhere but it has a huge capacity. I am drying tomaties and green chillies today. Plums sound great but no experience of doing it

Re: Potato problem
I have had a reply to the samples I sent the RHS . The culprit is stem canker and black scurf (Rhizoctomia solani). It is spread by infected tubers and encouraged by dry spring weather followed by periods of heavy rainfall which we have had. There is no treatment for the problem and infected plants ...
