Re: You grow. Who cooks?

Haha Primrose, my Fine Young Man came home with a Tesco bag of carrots back in August when we had two long rows on the allotment and a row in the garden. On being asked why, he said he had a blond moment when buying for his spaghetti bolognese (which is always excellent, btw) and bought carrots and ...

Re: Do ladies appreciate sharp knives ?

Another sharp knife fan here, we have several different Sabatiers. I try to give them a quick file sharpen evry time I use them, but it doesn't always happen! Using a newly sharpened knife is a real pleasure, like any well maintained tools.

Re: Green versus Red Basil

Not impressed with red basil (seeds given by my neighbour who is called Basil!) . The green Genoese and bush basil plants have done miles better.

Re: breezing in...

Thanks for your help, MW and Westi. The bulbs were from IOW, which was one reason why I was so disappointed in the result. I think maybe in previous years I have not been so conscientious about preparing the ground, and maybe that suited the garlic better. So I will revert to my more usual laissez-f...

breezing in...

...after ages not posting, as if nothing had happened Hello. Anyone else got rubbish garlic? Ours are undersized (very) and some have gone rotten (neck end, not roots). The ground grew fennel last year, I think, and was well dug over and fertilised with garden compost and blood fish and bone, and th...

Re: Asparagus! (Whoop!)

I would agree with Westi, Primrose, it's worth a try. We have 8 crowns which feeds both of us well in a good year. If you don't have much space, you will savour them even more :D

Re: Asparagus! (Whoop!)

Lucky you, Westi Our asparagus is still not showing, and I got a bit impatient, so I had a bit of a dig about. About 6 inches down I found one tiny tiny shoot, so I apologised to it (obviously) and covered it back up. Things are not looking good, they were well established plants. Anyone else having...

Re: Peaches or apricots in the poly tunnel

Precisely the reason I would like to grow them JB. I love the apricots and peaches we have had in southern France and Spain, but I never buy them in the UK because they just don't taste good. Have you any suggestions for good flavoured varieties?

Re: Peaches or apricots in the poly tunnel

Thanks Geoff, that's helpful. I'm not totally sure whether its the right thing to do as yet. It's the eventual height that I am a bit concerned about. A Pixy rootstock would result in the smallest tree I think, but the varieties on this rootstock seem to be a bit limited, although I haven't done tha...

Peaches or apricots in the poly tunnel

Hello everyone:-) Does anyone know anything about this? Not much headroom, only about 7ft. Would it be feasible to keep it in check with pruning? Would leaf curl be more or less of a problem? I once knew someone who put a 5 litre pot containing a peach tree into her poly tunnel , forgot about it, an...

Ha! Mine did that when we had a lot of snow a few years ago. There was a very narrow pathway through the snow to the drinker (and back again!)

Re: Pot size ?

That is exactly what I was thinking, OH, thanks for the enquiry. A misunderstanding on my part, though I was a bit surprised that anyone would have so many, even Johnboy.
