Re: Tomato Varieties

Regarding paste tomatoes - I've grown Jersey Devil and Antique Roman from Plants of Distinction. They look like long peppers and are very dense with a lovely flavour. No problem with blossom end rot.

Re: roasted new potatoes

Thanks for replies.

Yes, Alan, it was Peter's one. I don't know why I couldn't find it. Thanks a lot.

roasted new potatoes

Some time ago - over a year - there was a recipe on this forum for roasted new potatoes. It involved smashing them with a large knife at some stage and I'm sure garlic and herbs came into it as well. I've been looking for this and can't find it. Does anyone remember this method or knows how to cook ...

ash on alliums

I know it's a good idea to put wood ash on onions and garlic, but I'm sure I've read somewhere that there's an optimum time for doing this. Can anyone help, please? Thanks.

Re: Another potato question

Alan, I think you could well be right. I'd tried the potato council and saw Cabaret and didn't connect. Well spotted! My ones look just like the photo - very oval, even shape and size, yellow skins etc. I can just imagine someone from the suppliers saying the name to the printers over the phone and ...

Re: Another potato question

I've just bought a new variety to me - Cabernet. I can't find it on any websites - in fact when I typed in 'potato variety + Cabernet' I got recipes on potatoes with Cabernet Sauvignon! There was no information on the advertising card where I bought them. Has anyone else heard of this variety? -----...

Re: Storing cucumbers

How about cucumber soup - hot or chilled.

1kg cucumbers
onion and garlic
chicken stock.

Fry onion and garlic in butter, add chopped cucumber, add stock.
Cook 20mins
Liquidise.

Works very well with courgettes - again, hot or chilled.

Re: Insides of marrows

I freeze overgrown courgettes: scoop out seeds, cut into chunks, 1lb in a bag. I freeze tomatoes as well. You can make a perfectly good simple ratatouille by frying onion and garlic then tipping in courgette and tomato straight from frozen. It takes longer to cook, of course, and you spend a bit of ...

Re: Cucumber plant - yellowing leaves

My cucumbers leaves always go yellow. It doesn't seem to do any harm. The new leaves are always green. I just assumed they were supposed to do that.

Re: Can you make a liquid fertiliser with Alkanet?

I've got more alkanet than comfrey in my garden and have used both as fertiliser for a few years now. I'm very imprecise. I have a 100 litre water butt which I fill with water and put an onion sack (one of those made from orange plastic mesh) stuffed full of comfrey/alkanet leaves in it. Leave it fo...

But be warned, keep them somewhere safe - I left a whole pile of peas drying in a barn and the mice ate the lot!

Maggots/larvae in my comfrey tea

I've be brewing comfrey tea (just leaves in water in a bucket with a lid on it) for about 3 weeks. When I took the lid off today there were a lot of maggotty things with a long thread like tail wriggling about in it. About an inch long, white, and quite a few of them seemed to be almost tied togethe...
