Re: Oven drying surplus crops.
m This is a list of the water contents of a selection of veggies and fruit. If you weigh your produce before you start drying in grammes then you can work out how much water has been lost and whether they are dry enough to be stored. Most produce should break with an audible snap and splinter into l...

Re: Oven drying surplus crops.
I re-use the plastic boxes I get from the Chinese takeaway or le Parfait style jars usually. I forgot to mention that something like a flat wooden spatula is the best item for wedging the oven door open as plastic items may melt or taint the flavour of the drying food if they get over hot. I don't r...

Re: Oven drying surplus crops.
Dear Westi, this may sound completely counter intuitive but you need to keep opening the oven door. These are the reasons why. A. You have just loaded up a sealed box(oven) with several pounds of water that you are hoping to remove from your fruit and veg. B. This water cannot leave the box(oven) be...

Re: Bamboo Canes
Keep them indoors and dry when not in use. Tap out the crud from the ends before storage. If you want 3 or 4 ft canes buy 6 or 8 ft canes and cut them in half. This will save a few pence per bundle (a consideration if you want a lot). They will also be thicker and sturdier than the 3/4 ft canes you ...

Re: Tens Machine
m I got this one just over a year ago from Amazon. Very convenient to carry about with me (fits in a money purse) and the reusable pads are excellent (replacement pads are available). Not too many buttons to confuse things up. NOT to be used if you have a pace maker fitted (or any other such electri...

Re: What is this please?
what you have there is Ragwort, it is a British native but is considered a noxious weed. if you have one now, and you let it seed, there will be lots next year..... Here is a link to explain a bit more about it.

Re: arrgh whitefly!
Dear Paul, what you need is Encarsia formosa, the biological control. The parasitized whitefly scales arrive attached to little cards which you hang amongst the plants. Quite a lot of places stock them and as the little cards all look as though they come from the same manufacturer go with price and ...

Re: Venidium Orange Prince seedlings
Dear Monika,
I would keep removing flowers until about a week before they need to be planted out. Petunias grow so quickly that this is all the time they need to get back into flowering mode at planting time.

Re: Venidium Orange Prince seedlings
Dear Kazimoto,
Remove them; leaving these flowers will cause the plants to become stunted and the plants will not do at all well after they are planted out. Removing the flowers will also make the plants bushier, which is a good thing.

Re: Max/Min Thermometer.
I Should have mentioned this; with some of the cheaper thermometers you should check that the readings are the same on both sides of the gauge. I have been presented with thermometers where the readings displayed differed by over a degree centigrade. I think it has something to do with the way the n...

Re: Max/Min Thermometer.
Mercury ones are not available anymore. They have been replaced with alcohol(?) ones. These have a big disadvantage; the dye used to make the readings legible fades so they don't last very long. Here is one I found online.

Re: Sowing outdoor tomatoes
Around 8 weeks before you plan to put them out is my usual rule of thumb. I prick out into a 3 inch pot and then into a 5 inch pot (with cane if needed) before planting out. Planted deeply when they are put into the ground they won't flop around too much.
